How Distance Calculation Works

This tool computes the great-circle distance — the shortest path over the Earth's curved surface — between two cities or two sets of coordinates, using the Haversine formula. Results are shown in kilometers, miles and nautical miles, along with estimated travel times.

Straight-Line vs Driving Distance

The great-circle distance is the "as the crow flies" distance. Actual road distance is typically 15–30% longer because roads curve and follow terrain. Flight distance, by contrast, is very close to the great-circle figure.

Example

New York to Los Angeles is about 3,936 km (2,446 miles) in a straight line — roughly a 5-hour 23-minute flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tool uses the Haversine formula to find the great-circle distance — the shortest path over the Earth's surface — between the two cities' coordinates.

It is the straight-line (great circle) distance. Actual driving distance is usually 15–30% longer because roads are not straight.

A nautical mile is used in aviation and maritime navigation and equals about 1.852 kilometers, slightly longer than a regular (statute) mile.
