How Temperature Conversion Works
Unlike length or weight, temperature scales have different zero points, so conversion uses formulas rather than a single multiplier.
Formulas
Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32
Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15
Example
100 °C = 212 °F = 373.15 K (the boiling point of water). 0 °C = 32 °F (the freezing point).
Handy Reference
- Body temperature: 37 °C = 98.6 °F
- Room temperature: 20 °C = 68 °F
Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 and add 32. For example, 100 °C × 9/5 + 32 = 212 °F.
100 °F is about 37.8 °C, calculated as (100 − 32) × 5/9.
Kelvin is the scientific temperature scale that starts at absolute zero. Convert from Celsius by adding 273.15 — so 0 °C is 273.15 K.
