How Time Zones Work

Every location on Earth belongs to a time zone defined by its offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). New York, for example, is in the America/New_York zone, normally UTC−5 (UTC−4 during daylight saving time). This tool looks up the zone by city or country and shows the current local time, UTC offset and whether the area observes DST.

IANA Time Zones

Zones are identified by IANA names like America/New_York or Asia/Tokyo. These names, rather than raw offsets, correctly handle daylight saving time and historical changes.

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Many regions shift their clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, changing the UTC offset for part of the year. This tool reflects the current DST status automatically, so the offset you see is always accurate for today.

Frequently Asked Questions

A UTC offset is the difference between a location's local time and Coordinated Universal Time. New York at UTC−5 is five hours behind UTC.

Yes. During DST the clock moves forward one hour, changing the UTC offset. This tool always shows the current offset, so it reflects DST automatically.
