How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage

Asphalt is ordered by weight. Find the volume (length × width × thickness, with thickness in feet), then multiply by the hot-mix density of about 145 lb per cubic foot and divide by 2,000 for tons. That works out to roughly 2 tons per cubic yard.

Typical Driveway Thickness

Residential driveways are usually 2-3 inches of asphalt over a compacted gravel base; commercial lots are thicker. Order a little extra for compaction and edges.

Need the area first? Use the Square Footage Calculator, or size the gravel base with the Gravel Calculator.

Uses a standard hot-mix density of ~145 lb/cu ft. Actual tonnage varies with the mix. Order extra for compaction.
